What is sound tourism and why it’s changing the way we travel

There’s a question we get asked a lot lately: “But what exactly is this, a podcast with a map?” Not a bad definition to start with, but it falls short.

Sound tourism is about exploring cities on foot while you listen to narration tied to specific locations — not generic audio, but a story that changes depending on where you’re standing. Unlike a museum audio guide, it lets you move freely: you set the pace, stop when you want, and the audio waits for you.

What exactly is sound tourism?

Sound tourism means exploring a place while listening, through headphones, to narration designed specifically for that stretch of street, that square, or that particular corner. The content is tied to geolocation, so the story you hear changes depending on where you’re standing.

The difference from a traditional museum audio guide is freedom of movement. You set the pace, stop when you want, sit down at a terrace mid-route if you feel like it, and the audio waits for you. There’s no group of fifteen people setting the pace, no umbrella held high to follow through the crowd.

Where does this format come from?

Sound tourism wasn’t born in a tourism innovation lab. It came from something much simpler: the feeling that cities are better told by someone who lives them, not someone reading from a script memorised for twenty groups a day. The format gained traction in Europe in recent years, with pioneering projects that proved something that seems obvious once you hear it: the ear travels too.

When you walk with your eyes open and your ear caught up in a well-told story, something curious happens. You start noticing details you’d normally ignore — a specific facade, a street name, a door that seems to lead nowhere. The narration doesn’t compete with what you see: it activates it.

Why do more and more travellers choose sound tourism?

There are three reasons why sound tourism is growing compared to more traditional alternatives:

  • Real flexibility. No fixed schedules, no groups, no depending on whether the guide slept well that morning. You start when you want and pause when you fancy a coffee.
  • Immersion without a screen. Unlike constantly following a map on your phone, sound tourism lets you keep your phone in your pocket. You walk looking at the city, not the screen.
  • Real voices, not generic scripts. Good sound tourism is narrated by people who truly know the place — locals, not voice actors reading a Wikipedia entry.

How Ando fits into all of this

At Ando we take this concept a step further: each route is narrated by someone who lives or has lived in the neighbourhood, with voices, music and ambient sounds that create what we call a complete sound journey, not just historical information read aloud. Discover the city like you’ve never heard it before.

If you want to see what we’re talking about instead of reading about it, our route through Barcelona’s Barri Gòtic is the best way to understand it on foot.
