There are cities made to be seen from a car and cities made to be walked. Barcelona is, without question, one of the latter.
What’s the best way to discover Barcelona? On foot. Its centre is compact, its neighbourhoods link into one another, and almost everything worth seeing is within walking distance. Walking tours are the ones that truly let you get to know it.
Why does walking beat any other format?
- You see what you’d otherwise miss. On foot you notice a facade, a street name, a door that seems to lead nowhere. Details that from a bus or in a rush pass you by.
- You reach where nothing else can. The most beautiful streets of Barcelona’s old town are narrow, pedestrian and labyrinthine. No vehicle gets in there; your feet do.
- You go at your own pace. You stop for a coffee, sit in a square, go back to look at something again. The city is in no hurry, and walking, neither are you.
- It’s the most sustainable way. Zero emissions, zero added noise, maximum connection with the place. Walking is, moreover, responsible tourism almost without thinking about it.
Which Barcelona neighbourhoods call for a walking route?
Barcelona has several neighbourhoods that seem designed to get lost in on foot:
- The Gothic Quarter — medieval layout, hidden squares and two thousand years of history compressed into a few streets.
- El Born — elegant and full of life, perfect for wandering without a fixed plan.
- El Raval — diverse and with a character of its own.
- Gràcia — with its village feel within the city.
Each one feels different on foot, and none of them can truly be understood from a window. If you’re torn between a group walking tour and doing it on your own, we compare both formats in detail in free tour vs audio tour in the Barri Gòtic.
Walking, but with a story in your ear?
A walking tour is already the best way to discover Barcelona. Ando adds the layer that changes everything: as you walk, narration by locals from the neighbourhood — with music and ambient sounds — tells you about what’s beneath your feet, right where you’re standing. Your phone stays in your pocket, your eyes on the city and your ear on the story. Our route through the Barri Gòtic takes just over an hour and is the perfect way to start walking Barcelona like you’ve never heard it before.
