Tours in Barcelona: a guide to choosing yours

You search “tours in Barcelona” and in two seconds you have hundreds of options in front of you. So many that the problem stops being finding a tour and becomes choosing which one.

What’s the best tour in Barcelona? It depends on the type of traveller you are. If you want company and live questions, the free tour. If you prioritise freedom and your own pace, an audio tour. If you want to cover a lot of distance quickly, the tourist bus. This guide helps you decide without selling you a specific one.

What types of tour are there in Barcelona?

Free walking tours. Group walks led by a guide, with no fixed price (you tip whatever you consider fair at the end, typically 10-20€ per person). Great if you enjoy the group atmosphere and being able to ask questions live. Less comfortable if you don’t want a fixed schedule or walking among twenty to thirty people.

Tourist bus. The classic double-decker bus with stops at the most well-known landmarks. Practical for covering a lot of distance and getting a general overview, but it keeps you at a distance from the city: you watch it go by from above, you don’t walk it.

Private guided tours. A guide just for you or your group. The most personalised option and also the most expensive; it makes sense if you’re looking for something truly tailored.

Audio guides and audio tours. You buy access, download the audio to your phone and walk on your own, at whatever pace you want. No group, no schedule, no tip to calculate. Ideal if you value freedom over live interaction.

Themed experiences. Gastronomy, modernist architecture, film routes… Perfect as a complement when you already know the basics and want to dig deeper into a specific interest.

How to choose without getting it wrong?

The question isn’t “which is the best tour in Barcelona”, because there’s no single answer. The question is what type of traveller you are. Ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Do you prefer company and being able to ask questions, or exploring on your own?
  2. Does following a fixed schedule bother you, or do you not mind?
  3. Do you want to walk the city up close, or see it in passing to cover a lot in little time?

If you answer that you prefer your own pace, no groups and truly walking through the neighbourhoods, walking options — and audio tours in particular — are the best fit. If you want to compare the group format with the individual one in depth, we go into detail in our post on free tour vs audio tour in the Barri Gòtic.

Where does Ando fit in?

Ando is an audio tour, but with a twist: instead of historical facts read aloud, each route is narrated by locals, with music and ambient sound that turn the walk into a sound journey. You start when you want, stop wherever you like and walk at your own pace. If out of all the tours in Barcelona you’re looking for exactly that — freedom and a story that truly accompanies you — our route through the Barri Gòtic is the best starting point.
